Chipmunks in Rajasthan

I know what I was doing on the 11. September 2001-as do so many other people-when I heard about the World Trade Centre in New York. I was sitting with some backpackers in an internet café in New Delhi and looking at the images in complete shock. The internet connection was slow, much too slow and there were so many unanswered questions. Just that spring, I had stood underneath those towers and had admired these modern day cathedrals made of glass and steel. Now, only a few months later, grief replaced that sense of pride I had felt. In India, we discussed possible consequences over Lassi and whiskey and coke. A few days later, we took an Indian taxi, an Ambassador, to the desert country of Rajasthan. It was hot during a short lunch break and I was on the lookout for shade. It was lying there, a chipmunk, just resting on cool water pipe…
